a brief history of cricket in bretforton
by andrew witts
Bretforton Cricket Club was formed around the turn of the 20th century so cricket has been played in the village for more than 100 years.
The earliest score book that can be found is from the early thirties. The scores in those days were low, due to poor wickets and outfields with scores rarely getting above one hundred in an innings. Before moving to their present ground at the end of the 1940s, they played their home games in a field on the outskirts of the village towards Badsey. With a new ground, most of the players in the 1950s were from the village itself, which included the current Club President Ray Cleaver. At the end of the fifties, the Club folded only to be reformed three of four years later by more young men from the village. In the late seventies, they had their first purpose built changing facilities and club room in the shape of the sports club, which was built with money raised by the village itself and was shared with the Football Club. |
The Cricket Club then in 1989 entered its most exciting era to date, driven on by the hard work of Richard Harris, who was then secretary and groundsman, they decided to play league cricket, joining the Morganite Crucible League. After finishing 3rd and then 2nd, they won it in their 3rd season again with mainly players from the village itself. This was followed by a decision to change leagues and enter the Cotswolds Hills League, which is the league they presently play in.
After winning promotion to the Cotswold Hill Premier Division, Bretforton enjoyed a great spell winning the league in 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012. After many players retired or left the club in 2014, we have dropped down to just one team. Last year we came runners up in Division 4 - this year we are currently top of Division 3 in our rebuilding period. In the Junior Section we currently run two teams at U11 and U13. We are very proud of the fact we brought Daryl through our youth section on to the 1st Team and now on to Captain WCCC. Bretforton are a very friendly and well supported club right from the very hardworking team leaders to the groundsman, Bozy Harris and scorer, Keith Grove. |
